My Food Photography Portfolio:
I love the world of lights, camera, action. I am a self-taught professional photographer - I know what I like and what gets me great results. My photographs have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, Vanity Fair, Food and Wine, Esquire, LA Weekly, The Week, Tasting Table, Zagat, and many other print and online publications.
I've had lots of practice on magazine shoots, starting at TALK MAGAZINE with the great Oliviero Toscani and then later at EDIBLE LOS ANGELES, as well as shooting chefs and all the food photography - not to mention the styling- for my book MADE IN AMERICA and more recently for Ludo Lefebvre's latest book Crave 10 Anniversary Edition.
A lot of people don't realize I shot all the photographs in my book MADE IN AMERICA - this was one of the most thrilling aspects of this vast project. I would meet the chefs in their kitchens all across the country - no budget for a professional photographer so it came down to me - and not a lot of equipment. I use the Canon EOS 5D Mark 2 which has since been upgraded to the Canon EOS 5D Mark III 22.3 MP Full Frame CMOS Digital SLR Camera with EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens. I use the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard & Medium Telephoto Lens for Canon SLR Cameras
- LOVE LOVE LOVE this lens and use it for everything! Really - close ups and landscapes, portraits and action shots, low light and bright sunshine.
When I can't carry the big kit I use my Canon PowerShot S95 10 MP Digital Camera with 3.8x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 3.0-Inch LCD
- and this is what I prefer for shooting video. I know I should use the 5D - but somehow I'm more comfortable with the little camera. And more and more I have been turning to the video and camera on my iPhone.
I have a pretty amazing set of lights for when I need to create a mini-studio for food shots - but I really try to use natural light whenever I can - it just gives me better results.
