Woke up to a sunny Sunday morning in New York. Margot’s surprise birthday party last night was a huge success and given that I’m not drinking for lent – no hangover.
John hopped on his bike and raced off to get breakfast.
He returned 20 minutes later with a bag of gourmet doughnuts – pistachio, vanilla glazed homemade strawberry jam filled and crème brûlée. The line out the door at the doughnut shop had slowed him down. He assures us the fresh strawberry glazed doughnut didn’t make it into the packet, did he eat it on the ride home or did Geraldine wolf it down whilst making coffee? Not that we needed any more sugar.
The crème brûlée doughnut was beyond heavenly – the crunch as I bit into the doughnut through the crisp ‘burnt sugar’ exterior – and then the rich creamy filling inside. Next up the pistachio – less sweet than the crème brûlée – and more doughnut – so chewy and really great texture.
Needless to say we are now all sitting around in a sugar coma – Geraldine reading the Style Section of the New York Times and getting me up to speed on the Royal Wedding. (William’s having a McVities Rich Tea biscuit cake with chocolate for his groom’s cake – off to research recipes – haven’t given this enough thought – discussing wedding cakes – more to come…perhaps he should have a doughnut cake from Doughnut Plant?)
John on the telephone to his mother – it’s Mothering Sunday in the UK – so Happy Mother’s Day to all you yummy mummys back in Europe.
John is suggesting eggs for lunch to take the edge off – we need something as the sugar high slides towards the crash.
