We’ve been watching caterpillers grow – Everyday Minty took a photograph so that she could see how fast they doubled, tripled and quadrupled in size. Like nineteenth century lepidopterologists, Minty and Rémy documented the life cycle drawing the various stages of the life cycle in all its minute detail.
Letting them free was perhaps the best part – particularly the thrill of having a butterfly rest on your hand before being gently placed on the lavender for some much needed nectar.
Nature is not only beautiful but it can be cruel – a couple of the butterflies didn’t make it. I suggested pinning them to a board but the children wanted to let them free – “for the wings of fairies.”
